Hi, it’s Ginnie. You just spent weeks, maybe months, and a whole lot of money on your renovation. The new kitchen is in, the floors are down, the walls are painted. But there’s a problem: there’s dust on everything. And I mean everything.

After ten years of cleaning New Jersey homes, I can tell you that post-renovation cleaning is one of the most misunderstood jobs in this business. A lot of cleaning companies take these jobs without really knowing how to do them. They show up with a mop and a bucket, push the dust around, and leave you with streaks, scratches and a fine white film that keeps coming back for weeks.

Why most companies get it wrong

Construction dust isn’t regular household dust. Drywall dust, sawdust, plaster and grout haze are ultra-fine. They float in the air for days, settle on every surface and hide inside cabinets, vents, window tracks and light fixtures.

Here’s where untrained cleaners mess up:

They go wet too soon. Mix drywall dust with water and it turns into a gritty paste that smears across surfaces and dries as a cloudy film.
They scrub new finishes with the wrong tools. Abrasive pads and harsh products can scratch brand-new countertops, cabinets, fixtures and floors that you just paid for.
They clean bottom to top. Then dust from the ceiling fans and shelves falls right back onto the floors they just did.
They skip the hidden spots. Inside cabinets and drawers, vent covers, window tracks, door tops and light fixtures all get missed, so the dust keeps coming back.

How we do it the right way

My crew and I follow a process built for construction dust:

Top to bottom, every time. Ceilings, fans, light fixtures and vent covers come first, then walls and trim, then counters, then floors last.
Dry dust removal first. We remove the fine dust before any wet cleaning, so nothing turns into paste.
Gentle care for new finishes. We use the right products and tools for new stone, wood, stainless steel, glass and fixtures, so nothing gets scratched or dulled.
Inside everything. Every cabinet, drawer, closet and shelf gets wiped out, because construction dust always finds its way in.
The details. We remove stickers and labels from new appliances, windows and fixtures, clear window tracks and wipe door frames, door tops and baseboards.
A final walkthrough. We look at the space the way a buyer or guest would, and touch up anything that isn’t perfect.

A tip from experience: dust also settles into your HVAC system during a renovation. Once the work is done, it’s a good idea to change your air filter, or the dust will just keep blowing back out.
